RUNNING BAMBOO
CLUMPING BAMBOO RUNNING BAMBOO
Clumping bamboos are generally tropicals and are non-invasive. They grow in a habit similar to bananas. The shoots emerge in a tight or open habit – depending on the species. Regardless of the degree of openness of each species’ clumping habit, none of the clumpers are considered invasive. They are all well behaved and will not spread wildly.

Running bamboos send out underground stems (rhizomes) from which the new canes will grow. Running bamboos are more common. Many U.S. gardeners are familiar with the running bamboo species that send out rhizomes traveling for several feet. Every type of bamboo has it's purpose for your landscaping applications.

Bamboo Mealy bug can be a problem in Florida. Mealy bugs are detected by seeing a white web looking thing on the canes. The bugs are usually under this web. We have not ever lost an entire plant to this bug but it has done a job on some new canes. The best treatment we have found is a retail product called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub insecticide available at Home Depot or Lowe's. This product works for a year and seems to be very effective. The "Bayer" product is a systemic so takes awhile to become effective. In the meantime...visible Mealy Bugs should be sprayed with any good insecticide soap. The soap should be applied directly on visible Mealy bugs and repeated when new Mealy's crawl from their shelter under the leaf.
